7 Best Budget Friendly Superfoods That Every Girl Can Afford to EAT ...

Superfoods are something I am a huge fan of, and talk a lot about on my blog, and I’d like to share with you some budget superfoods to add to your diets if you find superfoods intimidating in cost and convenience. I realize there are many pricey superfoods out there. While I do buy these on occasion, they aren’t a weekly purchase. Most containers last up to two or three months, which make them economical, but perhaps not convenient to come out of your weekly grocery budget. So, save those for later when you can afford them, since they do have numerous health benefits, and enjoy some of the more budget superfoods in the process. Eating superfoods is a great way to nourish your body on a cellular level. It helps satisfy you sooner and longer, so you don’t reach for unnecessary calories during the day, and also enhances your energy levels, mood and heart health.

Maca

Maca Maca is one of the best budget superfoods of all and one that I believe all men and women should add to their diet. Maca is rich in adaptogens that help the body and adrenal glands cope with stress. This keeps your energy stabilized, so it increases your energy if you’re fatigued, and calms you down if you’re stressed. Maca is stimulant free and has a delicious caramel, butterscotch-like taste. It seems silly to drop $11-20 on a bag of maca, but keep in mind that the best brands, which will be organic, non-GMO and ethically sourced, come in inexpensive packages as low as $12 and last two months. You only need a teaspoon a day to see a noticeable difference in your mood, energy and hormones. Maca is a root vegetable from Peru, and is one of the best foods to eat for fertility, libido, your mood and your energy. Add it to a smoothie, yogurt or bake with it!

Berries

Berries We all know by now berries are a superfood, and if you didn’t already know, berries are the highest source of antioxidants of all fruits. You can buy them frozen to save money, and in my opinion, they are easier to store this way to prevent mold from occurring. Berries are rich in phytochemicals, fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and are low glycemic. They also help prevent depression, treat disease and increase heart health along with a healthy metabolism.

3

Kale

Kale Kale, kale, kale! We all hear so much about it, and I’m going to tell you it really is worth the hype. Kale is affordable, and one of the most nutrient dense foods you can consume. It is rich in Vitamin A, magnesium, fiber, omega 3 fats, chlorophyll, low in calories and is delicious in so many ways.

4

Onions

Onions Did you know onions are a superfood? They are! They might not smell that great, but they are excellent for you. They rid the body of excess mucus, act as a natural protectant against bacteria and viruses of all kinds, help ensure healthy bowel movements, protect your liver and help it to cleanse properly, act as a diuretic due to a large amount of potassium and water, and best of all, the onion is one of the cheapest veggies you can eat! A whole bag only costs about $2, and they aren’t necessary to buy organic unless you prefer.

Hemp Protein

Hemp Protein Hemp protein powder is one of the best superfoods to add to your diet for a few reasons. Hemp is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, magnesium, zinc, iron and potassium. It is also rich in chlorophyll, and is the cleanest, greenest protein powder you can buy outside of spirulina, which is great, but somewhat stronger in taste than hemp. Hemp has a delicious nutty taste that is just wonderful, and it is so high in brain-boosting omega 3 fatty acids that I make it a regular part of natural depression prevention in my diet. A whole 2 pound bag of organic hemp protein powder with no additives is only roughly $25 and lasts about two months. My top pick is Manitoba Harvest brand, which is USDA certified organic, and the only hemp protein made right here in the U.S.

Spirulina

Spirulina If you’ve already heard of spirulina but haven’t tried it, I’d like you to try and give it another chance. Spirulina seems pricey, but truly isn’t. For a small 5 ounce jar, you get a complete 143 serving size since you only need 1 teaspoon a day to reap the benefits. Yes, spirulina is a seaweed, but if you add it to a smoothie, you’ll never taste it! Why should you add it to your diet? Spirulina is rich in Vitamin A, iron, protein, Vitamin B 12 and potassium. It has no sugar, and is amazing for your thyroid, weight, skin, hair, nails, mood and brain health. In fact, it has over 880% of your daily Vitamin A content, 4 grams of protein, 20 calories, 80% of your daily B12 requirements and 80% of your daily iron requirements, all in one teaspoon! I buy Nutrex brand for the best taste and quality, and a 5 ounce jar costs about $11-13.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar I’m deeming apple cider vinegar a superfood because of all the many benefits it can provide you, all for a cost of $5 for a 32 ounce bottle that lasts about two months. Just one teaspoon a day diluted in a beverage can increase your digestion health, combat inflammation, increase your energy, lower your waistline, stabilize your blood sugar and increase hydration in the body. The magic happens due to the fermentation that apple cider vinegar goes through. Unlike white, distilled, balsamic or other kinds of vinegar that are acidic, apple cider vinegar is actually alkaline, so it is best for healthy blood pH levels. When your pH becomes acidic in the blood, you’ll be tired, gain weight and suffer inflammation. Apple cider vinegar is a great way to fight that, as long as you buy it raw, unfiltered and organic with “the mother,” which is the healthy bacteria that it is cultured with. I buy Bragg’s brand for the best taste and nutrition, and buy it online to save money. It is extremely tasty on a salad and adds such a nice zing over roasted veggies after they cook as well.

These are by no means my only favorite superfoods, but are some of the best for your budget. There are actually many budget friendly superfoods out there, outside of these. I’ve simply picked the top ones that I use and feel are most beneficial, and are easy to add to any person’s diet. Do you have a list of certain superfoods that are part of your budget? I have to agree about the spirulina. Unfortunately I'm allergic to onion (yes, there is such a thing).

Thank you. How do you use them? How many a day? Thanks.
