Your thyroid is one of the most important glands in your body, and one of the best ways to take care of it is to eat foods that boost your thyroid function. Not only are these foods easy to find, and so tasty, but they also act like fuel for your thyroid, helping it to function at its best. If you’re finding yourself low in energy, gaining weight, or having chills, a bad mood, and low appetite, it could be a low thyroid issue. Try eating these foods that boost your thyroid function. Brazil Nuts

Brazil Nuts Brazil nuts are one of the ultimate foods that boost your thyroid function. Just one contains all your daily needs of the important mineral and antioxidant, selenium. Think of selenium as the ultimate food for your thyroid. It can’t function properly without enough selenium, and you truly do need this mineral, or your thyroid will suffer. Brazil nuts are also full of healthy fats that ensure your body is absorbing the selenium. Without healthy fats, you can’t absorb vitamins and minerals, which is why Brazil nuts are a great source of this important nutrient. Just don’t overdo it. Too much selenium is actually a bad thing, so keep it to one or two Brazil nuts a day for best results.

2

Fish

Fish Another top quality source of healthy fats is fish! Fish is a lean protein rich in B vitamins, amino acids, some selenium, and magnesium. All of these are essential to your thyroid. Oh, and don’t worry about getting too much selenium from fish if you’re eating a Brazil nut. The selenium content in fish is low enough not to cause a problem, but high enough to be effective. Eat 4 ounces per serving, three times a week.

3

Leafy Greens

Leafy Greens Leafy greens are a good source of Vitamins A and K, which are necessary for healthy thyroid function. Yet, too much cruciferous greens like kale, can actually hurt your thyroid function, so keep kale in your diet, but be sure to rotate your greens so you don’t get too much of one nutrient from a certain green. My top choices are romaine, spinach, kale, arugula, herb mixes, and a mix of spring greens. Collards are also good too!

4

Spirulina

Spirulina Spirulina is a deep sea algae, which is rich in iodine. Iodine is essential to a healthy thyroid, and one mineral many people are deficient in. Spirulina is the best source of this mineral, along with kelp. Though these don’t sound tasty, I know, I promise you that you’ll love the way these healthy foods make you feel. The tastiest way to eat these two power foods is to put 1 tsp. of spirulina in your next smoothie and sprinkle kelp flakes on your salad for a slightly salty boost. Though spirulina will turn your smoothie a dark green color, you’ll hardly taste it with the other yummy ingredients you put in it.

5

Berries

Berries Another high quality food for your thyroid is berries, and who doesn’t love berries, right? Berries are rich in antioxidants that support thyroid function and detoxification of harmful agents that hinder thyroid function. They’re also low in sugar, which is important for taking care of your thyroid as well. Add some frozen berries to your next smoothie or shake. Chances are, you’ll not only love the taste, but also love the energy boost.

Almonds

Almonds Almonds are another nut that your thyroid loves! Almonds are rich in protein, magnesium, zinc, copper, B vitamins and Vitamin E. All of these nutrients are important for your health, and overall healthy thyroid function. I love adding some soaked almonds to my smoothies, or topping my yogurt with them. Soaking almonds increases their sweetness, nutrient absorption, and also makes them easier to digest. They’ll plump up nicely and have a sweet, chewy texture that is so much better than eating them plain, though that is a fine option as well. Either way, almonds are one of the best nuts for your thyroid, so eat up! Just ¼ cup a day does wonders for your weight, blood sugar, thyroid, and mood.

7

Cacao

Cacao Ah, my favorite thyroid food of all is cacao! Cacao is just the best thing ever, if you ask me! It is a remedy for so many things, including low thyroid function. It is rich in all the minerals your body needs, including iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, and Vitamin C. Cacao is also rich in fiber and the saturated fats aren’t stored as cholesterol because cacao contains no cholesterol, unlike animal sources of saturated fats. Cacao also increases brain function, metabolism, and prevents and treats depression. Be sure to choose raw cacao powder or nibs, and choose unsweetened cocoa powder if opting for processed cocoa powder.

If you’re trying to boost your thyroid and need a little help, I hope you’ll take these 7 foods and add them to your menu this week. They’re really delicious, easy to eat and can change the way your brain and body function completely. Taking care of your thyroid is so important to your health. Have you ever had a low thyroid function?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

I have been reading all of the articles on thyroid and am impressed with all of the information. I am wondering though why you would have strawberries in the pictures for the two articles on healthy food and energizing food for thyroid when you list strawberries as a food you should avoid. It's mixed messaging!

My 3 yr old has congenital hypothyroidism so I really appreciate these tips :) thank you!
