Kimchi

Kimchi Kimchi is a national Korean side dish that is often served at almost every meal. It is prepared by coating cabbage leaf by leaf with a spicy mix of hot pepper flakes, onion, garlic, chives and more. While some eat it right away, others let it marinate for a period of time. As it ferments it develops a rich and slightly sour flavor that cannot be compared to anything else. Although the unfamiliar taste and the strong smell might scare some away, others feel that no meal is complete without it. This side dish is one of the most delicious Korean foods that I would recommend everyone to try.

2

Hoddeok

Hoddeok If you are a fan of any type of pancakes, you should really get the chance to try this sweet treat. Essentially it is a typical pancake with a little twist. Hoddeok is made by frying dough filled with cinnamon, brown sugar and chopped walnuts, until the insides have reached the consistency of syrup. This Korean treat is very popular among children, so you are assured to get satisfaction with this amazing pancake.

3

Soondubu Jjigae

Soondubu Jjigae Soondubu Jjigae is a Korean stew that is a little thicker than the soup consistency. I would describe it as a concoction of fish stock, a little bit of beef, shellfish, hot pepper flakes, tofu, and eggs. It is like an explosion of flavors in your mouth that is perfect to eat in the cold weather. In addition, it is quite healthy because it is light and the small amount of beef is used for flavor instead of using it as the main part of the dish.

4

Jajangmyeon

Jajangmyeon Although Jajangmyeon is originally a Chinese dish, the Koreans really perfected it in their own way, leaving a vague resemblance to the Chinese version of it. This dish consists of noodles topped with a thick sauce made of diced pork and vegetables. This dish is so popular among the Korean culture that an average person eats it at least once a week.

5

Bulgogi

Bulgogi If you have ever been to a Korean BBQ restaurant, then you probably stumbled upon bulgogi. This dish consists of grilled marinated beef that has somewhat of a sweet taste. Bulgogi is very versatile, traditionally it is served wrapped in lettuce leaves but some people choose to just eat it with rice and garlic dipped into a sauce. Whichever way you prefer, I am convinced that you will find it delicious.

Famous Quotes

Gimbap

Gimbap Gimbap is very similar to sushi in appearance but it is much bigger and filled with vegetables, ground beef, and rice instead of fish. For all of the history lovers out there, this dish was created during the Japanese occupation of Korea, which explains its similarity to sushi. You will often find gimbap in any typical Korean restaurants and when you do, make sure to give it a try!

7

Japchae

Japchae Japchae is another very popular Korean side dish that consists of cellophane noodles, pork, and vegetables all sautéed in soy sauce. Originally it was made without the noodles but once they were added, they became an essential part of the dish. The noodles are great for the chewy consistence while the vegetables serve as a great source of flavor. This overall mix really makes the dish work.

If you have always wanted to try Korean cuisine but never knew where to start, hopefully this list will serve you as a guide. Make sure not to stray away from food because of its appearance or unfamiliar smell, because you never know, it might be the best thing you will ever try!
