Stocking up on regularly low-priced health foods is one of the best ways to eat a whole foods diet, consume plenty of nutrients, and avoid taking in processed ingredients while spending a fortune doing it. The best part is, most all these health foods that are on sale can be found anywhere and can be combined and used in a variety of ways.
1. Almond Milk
Non-dairy milks, especially almond milk, are one of the best health foods that are on sale most of the time. It contains 50% more calcium than dairy milk, is rich in vitamin B12 and potassium, is a good source of vitamin D, and you can use it in so many helpful ways. Try a new brand each week, depending on which one’s on sale and remember to opt for unsweetened varieties when possible.
Bananas are literally cents for a whole bundle. Whether you eat them as a snack, add them to breakfast, or throw them in a smoothie, they're great way to get potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, and magnesium without breaking your budget. Oh and don't throw them out when they turn brown. Peel, chop, and freeze them in baggies to use for smoothies or to make non-dairy ice cream with them in your food processor.
3. Frozen Veggies
Frozen veggies are flash frozen right after harvest, so they're often fresher than options from the produce section. You can get a whole pound of broccoli, spinach, kale, collards, carrots and more for just a couple of dollars, plus you never have to worry about them going to waste. These will help fill out your meals all while costing less than what you could buy them for in fresh form.
Oats are one of the cheapest and healthiest whole grains you can eat. Full of fiber, potassium, vitamin B6, magnesium, protein, and iron, oats are a great way to save money and stay full. Feel free to buy generic, but go with rolled or steel cut as the healthiest option.
5. Greek Yogurt
Due to the rise of this trendy protein source, companies are catching on faster than ever to consumer demand for Greek yogurt. You can often find many brands that are just a dollar each week and though the brand on sale might not be organic or your favorite choice, it's cheaper than meat and will do in a pinch.
6. Beans and Pulses
Beans are so cheap and if they seem boring to you, try new ways to eat them. Use lentils in place of meat at dinner for vegan barbecue sandwiches or even vegan tacos! Buying from bulk bins will save you even more, but even varieties off the shelf are incredibly inexpensive.
Apples are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and water. Most all stores have some varieties of apples on sale each week, so enjoy trying new kinds to see which ones you like. Apples are filling and make a great breakfast on the run, afternoon snack, or just added to your lunch.
