If you are thinking about giving up soda, there are many healthy soda alternatives to choose from. Regular soda has absolutely no benefits, is loaded with processed sugars and unnatural flavorings, and can leech calcium from your bones. These are all problems if you want to stay healthy. Also, if you consume diet soda, these will be great healthy soda alternatives. Diet soda is packed with artificial flavors that have been shown to cause many ailments from weight gain to rotting teeth to even cancer! These alternatives are just as tasty, and will not have any harmful effects.
1. Coconut Water
This is one of the best healthy soda alternatives, because it boasts positive health benefits while getting rid of negative ones. Coconut water has been shown to boost your metabolism, improve digestion with its enzymes, and is full of natural electrolytes. If that weren’t enough, coconut water can actually increase your energy levels and help prevent diseases! This is because coconut water has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to help stave off diseases from your body. You can drink it straight from a young Thai coconut or buy the boxed variety at your local grocery store.
Just like coconut water, kombucha has benefits instead of side effects. First, kombucha is tea that has been fermented to increase the natural enzymes and create a fizzy drink. This is great for those giving up soda because you will still get that fizzy taste. However, it is sweetened with fruit and natural sugar instead of the artificial kind found in soda. Other benefits include improved digestion (from the fermentation), weight loss, and high amounts of glucaric acid. Glucaric acid has been shown to prevent cancer! Kombucha can be made at home, or you can buy it at a health food store and it comes in many flavors. The only negative about kombucha is that it’s quite expensive at 3 dollars a bottle. However, I will argue that spending money on kombucha now can save you a lot more on medical bills later in life.
3. Fresh Juice
Drinking raw, fresh-pressed juice has so many benefits to your body. Plus, it tastes amazing and sweet just like soda, only you are using healthy fruit! I’m not talking about buying juice from the store – I’m talking about freshly-pressed juice from a juicer. However, if you do not have a juicer you can try blending fruit with a lot of water to get a juice-like consistency. If you drink fresh raw juice, you will get the benefits of increased energy and circulation, better skin, hair, and nails, and reduced inflammation. The effects of increased energy are almost immediate because the nutrients are so concentrated in the juice. That’s why it takes so much produce to get one glass of juice! You could do your basic blend of apples, carrots, and beets to start.
These may be a little thicker in consistency than soda, but they are very helpful nonetheless. They aren’t helpful like kombucha is, if you consume soda with your meals. However, if you are a person who consumes soda as a snack or even a meal, smoothies are a great alternative. They are so delicious and tasty; you will never know you are getting a healthy dose of nutrients in the glass. Plus, you can make smoothies at home in whatever flavor you want to! Smoothies can be blended together in seconds, so they are almost as convenient as soda. You won’t miss soda once you taste a delicious smoothie.
This can be just as bad as soda, so hear me out on this one first. Don’t buy the pre-made drink mixes for lemonade – those are full of inflammation-inducing sugar that is not good for you at all. Instead, it is so easy to make homemade lemonade! You can do a couple of things to make this homemade. You can either pour water, juice from fresh lemons, and raw sugar in a pitcher to make it. Or, you can make a single serving from lemon juice, stevia, and water. Both are delicious, and have the digestive system benefits of lemon. You will get a sugar-free, natural version with the stevia, but raw organic sugar is still a lot better than drinking the processed form in soda. The best thing about lemonade is you can still drink it as a cool beverage in the summer!
If you have never had Zevia before and are looking to give up soda, you need to try this. It is like a dream come true for those giving up soda, because it comes in so many flavors like it, but it is all natural and contains no calories! It is sweetened with the natural, plant-based substitutes stevia and erythritol. Although this drink doesn’t have benefits, it doesn’t have the harmful effects of regular soda. It is fizzy, bubbly, and just like soda. However, if you do not like the taste of stevia (it’s one of those things either you like it or you don’t), this is not for you. You can find this at your local health food store.
7. Sparkling Water
If the Zevia seems like it will be too similar to soda and will have you craving the original stuff, there is still hope. Drinking plain sparkling water is a great idea to get that same bubbly drink. You won’t be getting any added sugar, either. However, you could combine some juice with sparkling water to create a great, healthy alternative to soda. It will taste even better than soda, especially if you used grape juice and made a sparkling grape juice! You will be getting powerful antioxidants that way, too.
This is the best option for you soda drinkers who drink it every day. That is because tea is cheap, healthy, and it comes in so many flavors! You can drink it iced in the summer and hot in the winter. It is also healthy and cheap enough to drink it whenever you would normally drink soda! Try to buy organic tea; when you buy it online it isn’t much more expensive than regular tea, plus it isn’t full of chemicals. Try drinking the herbal and green tea varieties instead of black tea for extra antioxidants. My favorite brand is Yogi tea, because every single kind tastes amazing and has beneficial herbal blends.
9. Hint Fizz
The brand Hint makes water that doesn’t taste sweet, but has a pleasant “hint” of the flavor you buy. I personally love Hint water, and Hint Fizz takes it to a whole new level. They added sparkling water, but still left out the sugar and unnatural sweeteners found in regular soda. This is great for those looking for a safe soda alternative with no iffy sweeteners. It has zero calories, is all natural, and comes in blackberry, peach, watermelon, and strawberry-kiwi.
Trying to quit drinking soda does not have to be boring. Although it is important to consume a lot of water, that doesn’t mean you only have to drink that to be healthy. With these healthy alternatives, you won’t miss soda at all and you will be saving yourself from health problems down the line. What is your favorite thing to drink other than soda?
