Lattes are traditionally filled with sugar, fattening dairy cream, artificial syrups, and even low-quality coffee, but you can make a low calorie latte right at home that’s free of all those ingredients and that tastes delicious! If you think it’s not possible, just wait until you try this out for yourself. The following ingredients are a great example of how you can transform a drink that’s anywhere from 300-500 calories and lower it to under 50 calories per 8 ounce serving at the most. 1. Organic Coffee
The first step to making a low calorie latte that tastes delicious is to use a high quality coffee, preferably organic coffee. This won’t change the calorie content but will make your latte taste better. Coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops when it comes to pesticides, which not only affects the taste but also makes it unhealthy for your body.
2. Filtered Water
To brew your coffee, make sure you use filtered water if possible. Sometimes not even the best coffee filter can remove excess chlorine and lead from tap water, which makes your coffee tastes bitter and flat. Use a water filter pitcher or install a filter on your sink or in the fridge.
3. Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
To add that creamy factor you’re looking for, try using non-dairy milk instead of cream. I always choose unsweetened vanilla almond milk because it’s lower in calories than all other non-dairy milks and it tastes the best in coffee, in my opinion. You’ll only need ¼ cup at the most per serving, which equates to about 7.5 calories.
4. NuNaturals Vanilla Stevia
Of course, you can’t have a latte without a little sweet factor in there, but before you reach for the Splenda, try some vanilla liquid stevia instead. I like the brand NuNaturals because it’s sugar-free, non-GMO, calorie-free, and chemical-free.
5. A Dash of Cocoa Powder
This is my special trick for making a low calorie latte taste like a rich coffee house treat. Use just around ¼ - ½ teaspoon of dark cocoa powder, such as Hershey’s Special Dark, and stir it into your coffee just before serving. It adds a rich, indulgent taste and only contains 2 calories for 1/2 teaspoon.
6. A Milk Frother
Using a milk frother is a great way to make your latte foam up just like the types you buy from the coffee house. You’ll need a mini frother or an immersion blender to make this. To a large coffee mug, add your almond milk, stevia, cocoa powder, and then pour the brewed coffee in last. Give it gentle stir with a spoon and, using the milk frother, gently froth it until you get a nice foam on top. That’s it- no fattening whipped cream needed!
7. A Dash of Cinnamon
To top your latte off, add a dash of cinnamon as the final touch. This not only gives it a sweeter taste but also aids in digestion and regulating insulin in the body. Cinnamon is also a great brain-booster so it’s great to pair with coffee and cocoa, which both also help aid mental focus.
