Did You Know Champagne Has so Many Benefits? ...

By Corina

Because champagne is surprisingly a more beneficial drink than you might imagine (as long as you don’t go overboard), there are a few interesting benefits of champagne that you should consider. Champagne is actually sparkling wine that comes from the Champagne region of northeastern France, so technically if it is not from that region, it’s just sparkling wine and not champagne. A nice glass of perfectly chilled bubbly is exactly what you need for celebrating a special occasion but did you know that champagne offers health benefits too? Here are a few very interesting benefits of champagne that you should consider:

1. Improves Spatial Memory

It may surprise you but one of the most important benefits of champagne is the fact that it can help you improve spatial memory. Spatial memory is actually the ability to recognize your surroundings, as well as perform complex tasks and calculations. A lot of studies have shown that spatial memory can be improved after the consumption of champagne, so this finding is very important for older people who can be threatened by dementia.

2. Fewer Calories

Did you know that champagne contains fewer calories than white or red wine? Four ounces of champagne is roughly 90 calories while the same amount of red or white wine contains about 100 calories. Also, serving sizes for champagne are generally smaller than other alcoholic beverages, so this keeps the calorie count even lower.

3. You’ll Drink Slower

Because champagne is a sparkling drink and contains a lot of bubbles, it will make you drink slower and you will also feel full quicker. This is good news for your waist line and you’ll also avoid having a hangover the next morning. Besides, bubbles are so much fun, so the next time you celebrate something, why not choose having a glass of champagne instead of your regular glass of wine?

4. It’s Healthy for Your Heart

Champagne is actually just as healthy for your heart as a glass of red wine is. This is because it is made from red and white grapes, thus it contains resveratrol, which is an important antioxidant that reduces bad cholesterol, prevents damage to your blood vessels and prevents blood clots. It also contains polyphenol antioxidants which protect the heart.

As part of taking control over your health and wellbeing, it's important to pay attention to the amount of sugar you consume daily. Did you ever wonder how many grams of sugar are in a teaspoon? Understanding this can help you make healthier choices and avoid those sneaky sugars that add up throughout the day. No doubt, your body will thank you!

5. It Improves Your Short Term Memory

Champagne will not only improve your spatial memory, but it will boost your short term memory too. A lot of studies have shown that certain proteins within the champagne are beneficial for short term memory. It is hypothesized that if an individual drinks champagne occasionally for a period of three years, they could have an increase of 200% of the memory-boosting protein in their brain.

6. It Contains Antioxidants

This bubbly drink actually contains a lot of antioxidants, which are nutrients that work to try to contain the damage in our body caused by free-roaming radicals. Free-roaming radicals are often linked to disease, fatigue and even weight gain. If you want to make this drink even healthier, you could add some berries, since these little fruits are very rich in flavonoids which are another type of antioxidant with cognitive and health benefits.

7. Cheaper Alternatives

Since real champagne, as opposed to sparkling wine, is quite expensive, know there are cheaper alternatives available out there such as Prosecco and Cava that have been found to contain all the antioxidants that were mentioned in this article.

Champagne has a lot of health benefits but try to drink responsibly and don’t go overboard. Do you know any other benefits of champagne? Please tell us about them in the comments section!
