By Heather

Certain superfoods for stress can make such a difference in your diet. A little goes a long way when it comes to superfoods, making them worth the money. I realize not everyone can afford superfoods in their budget, but start where you can. Many all in one products can be great to start with when it comes to superfood blends. My favorites are Bright Earth Superfoods, Philosophie Superfoods, and Amazing Grass Superfoods, which all offer certain blends with some of these nutrients, or all of them. I love superfoods because they not only enhance your energy, beauty, and your mood, but also your stress levels. When you look for a product, look to make sure it has these specific superfoods for stress. You’ll notice big benefits in no time once you add these to your diet!

Maca

Maca Maca is by far one of the most well known superfoods for stress. Maca is a root vegetable, and only grown in Peru. It’s sold here as a convenient powder. It’s rich in amino acids and hormone boosting properties that enhance its effects on your mood. It can help you cope with anxiety, depression, low libido, and physical stress. It has a nice caramel, slight butterscotch flavor, making it perfect for smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, or anything else.

Camu-camu

Camu-camu Camu-camu is a magical berry that is amazing for your stress levels. It’s the highest source in the world of Vitamin C, with 600 times the daily recommended amount in just one serving. Camu-camu is an exotic berry that most people are hesitant to try at first, but once they do, they love it! It enhances immune health, and is even now being said to be a potent anti-viral food. Camu-camu can also increase your skin health, since Vitamin C is a powerful nutrient for helping keep your skin youthful and wrinkle free. I like to use it in oatmeal and smoothies, but it’s also tasty in some of the blends I mentioned above.

3

Cacao

Cacao Cacao is a well known superfood and is fabulous for stress. Cacao is rich in hormone boosting properties, it reduces depression, and it helps aid in fatigue, and anxiety. Cacao is basically raw chocolate that is sold as a whole form, or as a powder you’ll see sold as cacao powder. I like cacao nibs too, which are much like chocolate chips. Unlike processed chocolate, cacao contains less caffeine, fewer toxic chemicals, and more antioxidants. It also contains no sugar, milk fat, or anything else except pure chocolate. Cacao is the highest source of antioxidants in the entire world.

4

Spirulina

Spirulina I’m a huge fan of this superfood, and it’s potent for fighting stress. Spirulina is a seaweed and the highest source of protein of all foods per ounce. It contains 150% of your daily Vitamin B12 amounts in just one serving, which is about 1 teaspoon, and over 800% of your daily Vitamin A requirements. It’s usually sold as a powder, but found in many superfood blends too. Spirulina’s nutrient profile helps prevent depression, aids in reducing anxiety, and can give you a huge boost of energy. It is also wonderful for your thyroid health, which can take a hit when you’re stressed or nutrient deficient. It has a strong taste, but luckily, it is easily masked in a smoothie with some stevia, banana, dates, cacao, or berries. You can also take spirulina in supplement form for a more convenient way to get it in your diet. My favorite brand for nontoxic surety is Nutrex brand. The spirulina is grown directly from Hawaii, and I can tell you they make the best spirulina on the market of all brands I’ve had. Learn more at nutrexhawaii.com.

Goji

Goji Goji berries are one popular little berry and people just love the taste of this tangy, sweet fruit. Goji berries are rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and even amino acids that make it a good source of protein considering it’s a fruit. Goji berries have been linked to hormone health, which can increase the sense of well being, and enhance libido. It’s also the only food that has been found to increase the production of the Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which helps fight stress-related aging and hormonal imbalances that lead to aging. It is sold in a whole form and the berries look a bit like red raisins, though they're tart, not sweet. You can buy it as a tea or powder as well.

Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass This superfood might seem a little “out there” but it’s amazing for you. I love using it as a powder for a less expensive way to get it in my diet. Wheatgrass is best for reducing stress, aiding in sleep, aiding in detoxification, and reducing physical stress from inflammation. It’s also wonderful for helping with weight loss and sugar cravings. Wheatgrass should be bought gluten-free if you’re sensitive, since this ensures it was produced before the gluten had time to develop in the wheat plant. My favorite brand is Amazing Grass, which is raw, gluten-free, and vegan, along with 100% certified organic and non GMO.

7

Acai

Acai Another top favorite superfood I use to beat the blues is acai berries. Acai berries are a well known, and they deserve to be for their incredible health properties. Acai berries are actually a wonderful source of omega 3 fats that help fight stress, depression, anxiety, and weight gain, along with improve heart health. They are also sugar-free, so they won’t spike your glycemic index, leading to an increase in cortisol from high blood sugar levels. Acai berries are also rich in antioxidants, which help keep free radicals out of the body to fight physical stress. I like to buy it as a powder, but you can also buy it in whole frozen fruit form at supermarkets like Whole Foods. It’s usually found in the freezer section with the ice cream, and comes in handy little single serving packs.

If you’re new to superfoods, I’d encourage you to give them a try. Remember, you don’t need but a little to go a long way! Just one teaspoon a day of a whole superfood or a blend can do wonders for your stress. I suggest using them in the morning so they can give you the best effects all day. Do you use superfoods? What’s your favorite?
