Eliza

Whether you live somewhere where you get snow or not, you can still have a white winter with your food. It turns out that white foods are full of nutrients and should be part of your rainbow when you shop for food. Many of them are in season during the cold parts of the year so winter is the perfect time to prepare them and put them on your plate. Here are some white foods you are going to be so glad you decided to eat. They all taste so good!

What's your go-to comfort food?

1. You Can Totally Eat Potatoes

Potatoes have been wrongfully demonized as something that contains bad carbs and can lead to weight gain. That simply isn’t true. While you don’t want to eat only potatoes, having one now and then is a totally healthy choice. Potatoes are packed with potassium, which your body needs for a healthy blood pressure. Some studies say that potassium is also vital for strong and healthy bones.

2. Spice Things up with Onions

Onions are a white veggie that don’t get enough love. Not only do they add loads of flavor to your foods, both cooked and raw, but they also contain nutrients that you need in your diet. Onions are full of the antioxidant, quercetin, which research says can help alleviate the symptoms of allergies and eczema. Add onions to your salads, sandwiches, soup, stew and casseroles. They boost the taste and are super healthy and you can’t ask for more than that!

3. Pears Are Never a Bad Choice

Pears are considered white food because they are white on the inside and most of the part that you eat is white. Pears are easy to find in the fall and winter and they give you a juicy treat to look forward to when the weather outside is raging. There’s nothing better than having a pear with your sandwich at lunchtime, but you can also use it to make fruit salad or smoothies. Pears are loaded with fiber and antioxidants, so have one today.

4. Keep Yourself Well with Garlic

Garlic is super affordable and keeps for a while so you should always have some on hand. Why? Because garlic contains properties that can help with recovery from antibiotic resistant illnesses that have been taking headlines lately. Research shows that garlic oil can treat these diseases, such as MRSA, better than meds so including garlic in all of your meals is a great way to stay healthy.

5. You’ve Got to Eat Cauliflower Today

Cauliflower can be eaten raw or cooked and it makes a great addition to your winter rainbow of foods. Raw cauliflower is perfect chopped and added to salad or eaten with dip for a snack. Cooked, you can turn it into pizza crust or beef up a stew or casserole. It also tastes great roasted and served as a side dish. Cauliflower is said to kill 75% of cervical cancer cells in lab studies so you definitely want to eat some today.

6. Turnips Are Something New to Try

If you’ve never had a turnip, now is the time to give them a try. They make a great substitute for potatoes when you mash them and serve them with gravy. Studies on turnips find that they also help decrease blood pressure. You can’t go wrong with a turnip for dinner tonight.

7. Have a Banana Every Morning

Not only are bananas loaded with potassium and fiber, but they are portable and easy to eat so they make a perfect choice on rushed mornings. Again, they fall into the white category because the part you eat is white. You can add bananas to a peanut butter sandwich, a smoothie or fruit salad. You’ll love them!
