I've always enjoyed green tea, but having recently really fallen in love with it, I've been looking for all sorts of ingredients to add to your green tea. I know all the rhetoric about how it tastes great on its own, but I've never taken tea on its own. Call it a throwback to my iced-tea-soaked Southern childhood, when every ice cold glass was flavored with sugar, lemon, and whatever fruit happened to be in season. I like add-ins, you know? And if you do too, I think your palate will be quite pleased with some these delicious ingredients to add to your green tea!
1. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is unquestionably one of the most common ingredients to add to your green tea. It's popular for a reason, though: it's delicious. It creates a wonderful, refreshing bite that mixes very well with the natural taste. Besides, you get a double-dose of health benefits when you go with lemon juice. Green tea is great for you anyway, and the lemon gives you all that Vitamin C!
If lemon isn't your thing, or if you like mixing it with other things, you can also add all sorts of fruit to your green tea. Fresh or frozen, add in some berries or peach slices; just muddle them a little in the bottom of your cup, so you get a full burst of flavor. Apple and green tea pair wonderfully together, especially green apples, and I've heard that a pear adds a lot of flavor but I haven't tried it myself yet. Have you?
Honey is another common addition to green tea, and it's one of my favorites. Combining lemon juice with honey is even better. The combo is popular in all kinds of teas but it goes especially well with the flavor profile of green tea. Make a cup when you're feeling under the weather or want to indulge your sweet tooth a little. I'm not on the sugar-ban bus, but I adore using honey as a preferred sweetener in my tea; it kind of just makes you smile!
On its own or with a mix of any other ingredients, mint is a refreshing add-in for green tea. It's especially lovely with lemon and/or honey when you're feeling sick. It's also a great pick-me-up in the morning. Green tea is a lovely morning beverage anyway, but the mint gives it a fresh kick that's sure to help you wake up faster!
Vanilla is a lovely, creamy addition to your green tea. You can add in sugar or honey for a little sweetness, or let the vanilla flavor your cup all on its own. You can also pair it with different fruit flavors, or some of the other suggestions. Vanilla just makes everything better, and it's light enough that it doesn't overpower the tea itself.
If you're suffering from cramps, fighting a cold, or simply like a bit of bite, sprinkle in some ginger, or grate it fresh. Keep the amounts small, though, and add a little at a time – ginger packs a lot of punch, after all! Or you could always...
7. Chai Add-Ins
Include not just ginger but cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, cloves, a little allspice, and your choice of milk – cow milk, almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, whatever you like. Make your own Chai with an emphasis on whatever flavor you like best! Have you ever tried this?
Green tea is phenomenal on its own, but you can always make it better by tailoring it to your tastes. I know a lot of people who also add fresh herbs and spices, such as lavender, rosemary, pineapple sage, and even basil. What do you like adding to your green tea, or do you prefer it pure?
