Spread Your Cooking out over the Week

The Internet has tons of info on how to make freezer meals. One tip I see often is that you should have “power cooking” sessions and do all your cooking in one day. However, I don’t have an extra 3-4 hours of my day to spend cooking. So what I do is spread my cooking out over the week. As I make supper or breakfast one day, I just make double or triple what we are having. By the end of the week, I have a freezer full of meals that I didn’t go out of my way to make!

2

Package Your Food Well

Nothing tastes as gross as freezer-burned lasagna. Learn how to package your food well or your efforts will be wasted. Put your food in a plastic bag or wrap it in aluminum foil. Then put it into a container with a lid. Using disposable containers can cut back on dishes after the meal!

3

Know What Freezes Well

Not all foods freeze very well. Pasta, rice, potatoes, and some fruits are usually no-no’s when it comes to the freezer. However, you can freeze them with the right preparations. Just be prepared for the texture to be little different than what you’re used to. Pick meals that your family loves and will eat often so you aren’t wasting your time making food that no one wants to eat.

4

Label and Date Your Food

Nothing quite like having a “mystery meal” because you didn’t label your food when you froze it! Use a sharpie to label and date your food prior to freezing it. After 6 months, it’s best to toss any food you haven’t used.

5

Prep Your Ingredients at Once

Here’s a little tip for saving a lot of time while you cook. Have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go before you start cooking. Wash and chop all veggies, season any meat, and set out additional ingredients you may need. Not only does this save you a lot of time, but it also helps you make sure you have all the necessary ingredients before getting started!

Flash Freeze for Eating on the Go

Flash freezing is helpful so that you have food ready to eat on the go. Flash freezing is where you lay out food in your freezer for 30 minutes to an hour and then package everything into one container. Flash freezing is great for muffins, burritos, sandwiches, bread and other similar items.

7

To Thaw or Not to Thaw

The convenient thing about freezer cooking is that you can take your meal straight from the freezer to the oven or you can let it thaw first. If you cook it while frozen, it will need about 50% longer cooking time. If you decide to thaw your meal, then you will need to set it in the refrigerator or on the counter for a few hours before cooking.

Freezer cooking can really be a lifesaver for those days when you just don’t have the time, energy, or desire to cook. Use days when you do have an extra hour or two and throw a couple meals together so that on your next overly busy day, you can still enjoy a healthy and home cooked meal! Have you ever tried freezer cooking before?
