If you were asked to write a list of your top five cheat foods of all time, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that pizza would be on it! It’s a dish that is loved the world over, but unfortunately, it is also a dish that more often than not turns out to be unhealthy! With all the cheese and calorific toppings, pizza is a meal that you can’t really afford to have all the time, but what about it you made the effort to make it less bad for you? 1. Skip Meat
You can automatically make a pizza healthier by keeping it veggie. Leaving off things like pepperoni, sausage and other processed meats eliminates a lot of salt and saturated fat. Processed meats have been proven to increase a person’s risk of developing certain types of cancer.
2. Light Cheese
I’m not the Devil, I wouldn’t be one to suggest having a pizza with no cheese at all, but you can easily make the switch from full fat cheese to light cheese with no harm done at all! Light versions of cheese are much lower in saturated fat and sodium, and these days it’s fair to say that some of the light alternatives taste so good that it is hard to tell the difference!
3. Vegetable Toppings
Vegetable toppings are an area where you can really go all out and be as creative as you want. For some reason, they don’t feel as boring and ‘healthy’ when loaded on top of a cheese pizza base, so make the most of the psychological trick and get your five a day in one single meal!
4. Whole Wheat Crust
The crust isn’t something that you really concentrate on flavour-wise in a pizza, so why not make it healthier by swapping out white flour for whole wheat flour? It adds lots of beneficial B vitamins, magnesium and iron, and the important thing about whole wheat is that it hasn’t been stripped of all the healthy fibre and nutrients like white flour has.
As part of taking control over your health and wellbeing, it's important to pay attention to the amount of sugar you consume daily. Did you ever wonder how many grams of sugar are in a teaspoon? Understanding this can help you make healthier choices and avoid those sneaky sugars that add up throughout the day. No doubt, your body will thank you!
5. Cauliflower Crust
If you really want to be adventurous, then you can always completely swap the crust for a cauliflower base! Don’t knock it until you have tried it, you would be amazed by how tasty this gluten free, low carb option is!
