1

It’s Not All Juice

Just because it’s with the other juice doesn’t mean it’s actually juice. One of the most important things you should know about drinking juice is how to pick the right type. You want to look for 100% juice and stay away from fruit punch, juice cocktails and anything else that isn’t made from actual fruit.

2

It Can Be High in Sugar

Sure a glass of 100% fruit juice can count as a serving of fruit, but it is often loaded with sugar. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the juice if you want it, but balance it with the other things you eat and drink so you don’t go into sugar overload. Too much of the sweet stuff can lead to weight gain and insulin resistance. So don’t chug juice all day long.

3

Serving Size

It’s all well and good to say you won’t drink too much juice, but that’s easier said than done if you don’t know what a serving is. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a serving of juice is only 8 ounces. Measure it out to make sure you aren’t drinking more than you should be. And stick to just one serving each day to keep things under control.

4

It Might Be Colored

The truth about juice is that it might not be what you think it is. Some types of juice have added color to give them that appetizing shade you see on store shelves. Read the ingredients label carefully to be sure you are only getting exactly what you want and nothing that doesn’t belong in juice.

5

It Might Be Salty

Just like you have to worry about sugar in fruit juice, some vegetable juices contain a large amount of salt. The salt in tomato and other vegetable juices gives it a ton of flavor, but too much salt raises the risk of certain health problems. You can still enjoy your favorite juice, but don’t drink a ton of it and balance it with the other salty foods you eat over the course of the day.

Use Caution with Juice Cleanses

They sound really healthy, don’t they? Juice cleanses aren’t necessarily all they’re cracked up to be though. While it might sound like a few days of only drinking fresh juice can clear out your system and make you feel healthy as well as drop some weight, they can deprive you of much needed nutrients and leave you tired and sluggish. Talk to your doctor before doing a juice cleanse.

7

It Has Vitamins and Minerals

Despite everything, 100% fruit juice does contain a wide range of nutrients that your body needs to stay healthy. If you don’t eat a lot of whole fruit, a glass of juice can help you cover your bases and meet your fruit quota for the day.

How much juice do you drink? It’s not my go-to drink choice and I prefer fresh fruit, but my favorite kind is apple juice. What’s your favorite? Will you change your juice drinking habits after reading this?
