1. Keep Your Cool

If you want to learn new ways to make your groceries last longer, make sure that first of all you set your fridge’s temperature at 40°F (5°C) or even below. If the temperature in your fridge is higher than that, you risk growing harmful food bacteria.

2. Keep the Fridge Clean

Also, make sure that you always keep your fridge clean so that all your food will stay fresh longer. Clean your fridge out at least once or twice a week because if something in your fridge spoils, it will smell bad and it will also leave behind mold that will find its way to other food.

3. Store Onions in Pantyhose

No, this is not a joke; pantyhose are actually great for storing onions since they can help you keep them edible for up to 8 months. Just buy a cheap pair of pantyhose or you can use an old pair that you no longer need and make sure that you tie a knot in between each onion. This way, you can easily hang them in your pantry or even on your kitchen wall.

4. Store Herbs in Plastic

Another trick you can use to make your groceries last longer is to store your herbs in plastic. Just cover them with plastic wrap or put them in a plastic bag and secure with a rubber band. Then just place them in your fridge and pull them out when you need them. This is an ingenious method for keeping herbs like basil, chives or cilantro fresher for longer.

As part of taking control over your health and wellbeing, it's important to pay attention to the amount of sugar you consume daily. Did you ever wonder how many grams of sugar are in a teaspoon? Understanding this can help you make healthier choices and avoid those sneaky sugars that add up throughout the day. No doubt, your body will thank you!

5. Don’t Mix!

Don’t ever mix fruits, vegetables and meat in the same crisper because if something goes bad, it will contaminate the other foods too and this will only lead to waste. Also, after every grocery trip, move the older foods that are hiding in the back of your fridge forward, so you’ll consume them first.

6. Use Butter to Keep Cheese Fresh

In order to keep cheese fresh longer, you could just add a bit of butter to the cut side because the oils in the butter will help you keep the cheese from drying out and this way, you will not have to cut away hard, crusty cheese when you use it again. Make sure you never use plastic on cheese; just wrap it in wax paper instead and then store it in a plastic bag.

7. Store Food in the Smartest Spots in Your Fridge

If you want to keep your groceries fresh, make sure that you store your food in the smartest spots in your fridge. For example, don’t place milk or quick-to-expire perishables on your fridge door where the temperature fluctuates because they will spoil faster. Also, if you want eggs to last longer, store them inside the fridge and not in the door, even if you have an egg holder there.

There are a lot of ways to properly store food so it can last longer. I just mentioned a few here but I’m sure there are many more tips and tricks I could add to this list. Do you know any other ways to make your groceries last as long as possible? Do tell!

For any leafy foods like lettuce, spinach, herbs ...etc, put them in a plastic bag and put a paper towel in with it. It prevents it from getting slimy with salmonella as it draws up the extra moisture.
