Looking for some simple tips for cooking healthy? Here’s the thing. We all know that it is in our best interests to cook and eat as healthily as all of the popular celebrity chefs and food gurus on social media, but the truth of the matter is that sometimes it can be more daunting than the professionals make it out to be. Sometimes there are ingredients that you have never heard of, sometimes there is equipment that you can’t afford, and sometimes there are diet plans that you simply don’t like the look of! The best way to approach this kind of lifestyle change is to take it back to basics. Here are five really simple tips for cooking healthy.
1. Switch Oil for Broth or Water
There are plenty of instances in cooking where you have the opportunity to put oil to the side and use water or broth instead. A splash of broth to do something like sauté vegetables is perfect, doing the cooking job whilst also adding some extra flavour to the mix. You can do so much with water in terms of finishing things off with steam rather than oil. This is one of the best simple tips for cooking healthy.
2. Switch Beef for Turkey
Turkey is one of the healthiest meats you could possibly have in your diet, so it makes sense to switch out ground beef for ground turkey in lots of different recipes like burgers, chili, pasta sauce and tacos. It might need a little extra seasoning compared to beef, but the health benefits are absolutely worth it and herbs and spices are only going to add extra goodness anyway!
3. Rinse Ground Meats
Make your own ground turkey really easily. Once you have cooked the turkey breast, always make sure to rinse it off with hot water before grinding it into mince. This will help to remove some of the excess fat from the meat and make it even healthier. Remember to do this before the seasoning stage, because you don’t want to remove any flavour!
4. Avoid Pre-Packaged Foods
It might take a little extra effort every dinner time, but it really pays off to try to avoid pre-packaged foods of various kinds. When there are so many amazing fresh fruit and vegetables available for next to nothing, you have no excuse not to make a really big effort to cook cleaner and with more natural ingredients.
5. Swap Veg for Other Foods
Try to do some clever things with vegetables like making cauliflower rice over normal rice, and using sweet potato as the main ‘meat’ of a Thai curry over something like chicken. Much healthier and just as tasty!
