There are many ways to make your cereal tasty, so there’s no excuse for not including it in your diet. It’s important to choose healthy cereal that’s low in sugar and calories, but high in fiber and other nutrients. So put down the Fruity Pebbles and choose something else. Wholegrain cereal is a great addition to a well-balanced diet, so it pays to toss the right kinds into your cart. If you have trouble stomaching those choices, check out these ways to make your cereal tasty and you may have trouble stopping at one bowl.
1. Make It a Smoothie
This awesome point was generously submitted by one of our readers, Claire. Thanks Claire! You can submit your own point at the bottom of this post. We'd love to hear from you!
Turn your favorite cereal into a smoothie by blending the cereal to form a powder. Keep some cereal chunks if you want. Add fruit that complements the cereal, for eg: strawberries for a strawberry cereal. Add milk and yogurt and blend!
2. Try Different Milk
Cereal wouldn’t be the same without the milk, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with the same old cow’s juice. Try dousing your cereal with almond, coconut or soymilk for a new and exciting flavor that pairs well with the nutty and grainy taste of many kinds of healthy cereal. This is also one of the best ways to make your cereal tasty if you can’t have dairy foods. Yes, you can still enjoy a bowl of delicious cereal!
3. Add Fruit
Fruit is naturally sweet and adds some flavor to low-sugar cereals without being unhealthy. Add sliced berries, peaches, bananas or apples to your bowl of cereal. Not only will you get a yummy hit of great taste, but you’ll also add lots of nutrients to your cereal that are good for your health.
4. Sprinkle It with Cinnamon
Adding sugar to your cereal counteracts the benefits of choosing a healthy version. That doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a bland taste though. Sprinkle your bowl with a dash of cinnamon before you add the milk. You’ll get a yummy flavor without any added fat or sugar. Nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice are other tasty alternatives.
5. Make a Parfait
There’s no rule that says you have to eat cereal in a bowl with milk if that’s not how you like it. Try layering your favorite healthy cereal with plain yogurt and sliced fruit. It’s like dessert for breakfast! You can also have this yummy concoction for lunch, dinner or a snack. It’s especially great after a workout!
6. Add a Handful of Nuts
Nuts are a prime source of protein, fiber and heart-healthy fats, so putting them in your cereal is genius! Toss sliced almonds, walnuts or pecans into a bowl of cereal, add some milk and stir to combine. Enjoy a new and nutty breakfast meal that will give you energy to power through the rest of your morning.
7. Put in Chocolate
Yes you can! Chocolate is not the diet downfall that some would have you believe. Dark chocolate is a great source of antioxidants, which protect you from the free radical damage that plays a role in the development of a wide range of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke and cancer. That’s scary, but eating chocolate for breakfast isn’t. Add a small handful of chocolate chips to your bowl of cereal or sprinkle a bit of cocoa powder into the milk. Eating healthy never tasted so good! Just don’t go overboard or you could derail your efforts pretty quickly.
8. Mix It
If you just can’t give up the favorite cereals of your childhood, try mixing them with healthier versions so you can still enjoy them without gorging on sugar and calories. Gradually reduce the amount of the junk cereal until you can fully enjoy a bowl of good-for-you cereal. It’s that easy!
