There are lots of great reasons to eat less bread – and note that I definitely said “less,” rather than “none.” A lot of people choose not to eat bread at all, while others simply cut out white bread. But what about things like muffins, biscuits, bagels, and rolls? I'm a Southern girl, I don't think I'll ever be able to give up biscuits entirely. There are even times when I just want white bread – for turkey sandwiches after Thanksgiving, for example! Eating less bread is definitely beneficial, so don't worry if you can't or don't want to stop eating it completely. That's a personal choice – as is choosing to eat white bread, or replacing it with wheat or rye. I just want to present some of the advantages if you want to know exactly why to eat less bread.
1. No Nutrients
One of the most important reasons to eat less bread, especially forms of white bread, biscuits, and things like that, is an almost total lack of nutrients. You're not getting any fiber, you're not getting any grains, you're basically getting nothing important out of the deal. Wheat is a little better but if you're looking for nutrients, breads that feature whole grains are your best bet. If you're going to eat something, you need to make it count as much as possible.
2. Too Much Salt
Another good reason to eat less bread is that doing so can significantly lower your sodium. Too many breads, especially the processed kind you buy at the store, has quite a bit of salt. One slice now and then or a sandwich once in a while won't do any damage, but if you get into the habit, you could be in trouble. There are, however, several alternatives. Again, try whole grain breads, bagels, and other bread based products instead. Buying homemade braid or making your own is another option. You're so much better off when you know (and can pronounce) all of the ingredients.
3. Weight Gain
The fact of the matter is that bread can definitely make you gain weight. If you eat too much of it, all those carbs, the salt, the refined sugar, the preservatives, they will make you put on pounds. It has to do with insulin, which is why it's so important to keep a close watch on the amount of bread you eat. Eating it in moderation is fine, especially when you take the time to make sure it's as healthy as possible. Again, just remember to make the most of what you eat.
4. Increased Health Risks
Whether you're eating sliced bread, rolls, biscuits, or pizza dough, if you're eating too much of it, you're putting your health at risk. Being healthier is one of the best reasons to eat less bread, if not the best reason. From diabetes to high blood pressure to heart disease, too much bread leads to problems. Even if you eat too much whole grain bread, you're not doing yourself any favors. If you don't want to stop eating bread altogether, just remember moderation – and look for healthier breads or simply make your own.
5. Not Filling
Eating less bread actually suppresses your appetite better – especially if you're a fan of white bread. This is actually directly related to the nutrients, or lack thereof, in certain types of bread, like the convenient store bought kind. However, if you go for the whole grain instead, that definitely helps – but you still don't want to eat too much of it, because although you'll feel fuller for a longer amount of time, there's the weight gain factor.
6. Gluten Sensitivity
A lot of people are discovering an intolerance or a sensitivity to gluten. There are even certain diseases associated with gluten intolerance, like celiac disease. If you notice that your stomach gets upset when you eat bread, you might have a problem with gluten too. Moderation helps, as does looking for gluten free alternatives. In this case, however, you may need to cut out the bread altogether.
7. Carbs Overload
Another good reason to eat less bread is that so many kinds are loaded with carbs. Granted, you need certain carbohydrates; many of them are good for you. Still, too much of a good thing is still bad. That's why moderation is so important, especially if you're actively trying to lose weight.
As you can see, most of the best reasons to eat less bread revolve around nutrition. There are other reasons too, which involve personal choices and preferences. If you decide to eat bread in moderation, trust me, even that makes a big, positive difference.
