Alkaline foods prevent inflammation, disease, low blood sugar, poor nutrient absorption, brain fog, joint pain, acne, depression and so much more. Alkaline foods are foods that aren’t acidic once they enter the body. Most all raw foods are alkaline, but many cooked foods like root veggies are too. Alkaline foods can help increase your energy, and I find I just feel better overall when I eat them. Don’t become overwhelmed and try to eat a perfectly alkaline diet all the time. Just start where you can, beginning with 7 of my favorite alkaline foods. I think these are foods every woman could benefit from, and they don’t cost a fortune.

1. Avocados
Avocados are one of the most alkaline foods on the planet. They are rich in chlorophyll, Vitamin E, potassium, fiber, magnesium, and Vitamin B6. They are delicious on a salad, and so filling. Their heart healthy fats are also wonderful for women. They’re also called “vegan’s butter” because they truly do add that nice fatty flavor to foods without any cholesterol at all. They are useful in preventing and treating acne, joint pain and inflammation, anxiety and depression, along with weight gain.
2. Lemons
I use lemons on everything! I squeeze them on my salads, in my water, in my smoothies for a nice zing, into my tea and I make all my own salad dressings with them. Lemons are acid on the outside of the body, but once they enter the body, they alkalize the blood and fight inflammation and disease fast. They’re also full of Vitamin C, and low in sugar.
Frequently asked questions
3. Kale
Yes, I’m another person on the planet who is going to tell you to eat more kale. Sorry! Kale truly is so great for you though, ladies! If you haven’t found a way to love it, start today. I like mine best massaged in some hemp oil and lemon juice to make a salad. I shred it fine with my fingers, drizzle on 1 tbsp. hemp oil, juice from one lemon and cracked black pepper. Then I add whatever toppings I want. Kale is full of chlorophyll, which is the most alkaline nutrient on the planet. Chlorophyll is what gives green veggies and plants their green hue in color. It alkalizes the blood immediately, and prevent s and treats inflammation. Kale also prevents depression, anxiety, brain fog, weak bones, heart disease and more when eaten with a healthy diet.
4. Spirulina
I know spirulina might gross you out, but it is really, really great for you. Per serving it also isn’t too pricey. It contains more protein per tablespoon than any other food and more Vitamin B12 than any other food per serving, including animal proteins. It contains all essential amino acids, fiber, Vitamin A and chlorophyll. It alkalizes the body and helps decrease acidity in the bloodstream fast. Spirulina may be a weird tasting green powder, but it can easily be mixed in a smoothie so you don’t taste it too much. Buy organic spirulina when you can, and remember, a little goes a long way! One 5 ounce jar of spirulina usually costs about $11, but it has 147 servings! Where can you find that in any kind of meat product, I ask you?
5. Spinach
Basic spinach is a great alkalizing green to love. It is rich in Vitamin E, fiber, folate, zinc, magnesium, Vitamin C, Vitamin A and protein. It is also extremely low in calories. Spinach is amazing with so many foods and usually, most people eat spinach easier than they do other greens when first starting to eat leafy greens. It is a wonderful, simple way to eat more alkaline and incredibly rich in nutrients. Use it in a salad, a smoothie, or toss it into an entree.
6. Celery
Celery may sound boring, but is incredibly alkaline and so fabulous for you. It is rich in Vitamin K, which helps ensure you have healthy blood flow, and fiber. It also has a great balance of electrolytes including sodium and potassium so it lowers your blood pressure. When your blood pressure increases, it causes stress, and this actually causes inflammation, despite what you eat. Celery contains a bit of chlorophyll and is just a great veggie to eat all around. Dice it in your salads if you’re not interested in chomping on it raw. Celery is also great in juices and smoothies if you’re interested in that.
7. Cucumbers
Cucumbers are one of my favorite foods and they are incredibly alkaline. Though they are 92% water, they are full of nutrition. Cucumbers have potassium, Vitamin C, chlorophyll and help prevent and treat inflammation, especially if you exercise. Try chopping them and freezing them and using in your smoothies instead of fruit. They’re so refreshing and tasty! Plus, cucumbers are also amazing in salads, or to juice with as well.
Alkaline foods are incredible for you, and when you focus on eating more alkaline, you can take the focus off eating a perfect diet because you end up eating healthy foods that make you feel good. And really, that’s all that matters anyway. Do you focus on eating alkaline foods when you can? If so, tell me what your favorites are!
