You Won't Believe All the Benefits of Coconut Sugar ...

Lauren Jun 5, 2015

So the word is out and it’s spreading fast. Coconut sugar is the best kid on the sweetener block right now. Before I let you in on all the benefits, I’ll answer the question, what is coconut sugar? It is a natural sweetener – a form of sucrose - made from the sap of the flower bud of the coconut palm tree. After processing (in as natural way as possible), the result is a soft, fine brown sugar. So yes, it is a sugar but it is a form that releases energy more slowly and therefore is a better choice than other, more refined and processed sugars. Here are some of the best reasons to ditch the white stuff and switch to coconut sugar.

1. Coconut Sugar Has a Much Lower Glycemic Index than Other Sugars

A food’s glycemic index shows (among other factors) how quickly something you eat will raise your blood sugar levels. Coconut sugar’s Gi of 35 is lower than white sugar (Gi ~60) and high fructose corn syrup (Gi ~90). And as well as its low Gi, coconut sugar is also suitable for Diabetics because it contains inositol, a natural sweetener that plays a role in the health of nerve functions and relieving diabetic neuropathy.

2. Coconut Sugar is a Good Source of Electrolytes

It is well known that coconut water is an excellent natural source of electrolytes making it a perfect choice for hydration. Coconut sugar also contains the same sodium, potassium, and magnesium, all which help to regulate water in your body. As coconut sugar contains 400 times more potassium than regular table sugar, that’s good enough reason to switch.

3. It Contains Natural Minerals Your Body Needs

If you avoid dairy, you might need something to provide your body with enough calcium to have stronger bones. Use coconut sugar because it is a nice rich source of calcium. It also contains iron and zinc that boost immune system and contribute to stronger bones.

4. Eat Coconut Sugar if You Want to Keep Your Heart Healthy

One of the biggest benefits of coconut sugar is that it's loaded with nitrogen, which keeps your heart healthy and promotes overall cardiovascular health.

5. Coconut Sugar Contains Less Fructose than Other Sweeteners

Your body can handle a certain amount of fructose only – your liver breaks it down and converts it into a form of fat called triglyceride. You will find fructose in corn syrup, agave, and fresh fruits. It should be noted that agave nectar contains 90% fructose whereas coconut sugar is only 45% fructose, making it one of the best sweeteners out there.

6. Your Body Needs the Vitamin C and Antioxidants That Coconut Sugar Contains

Vitamin C is important for proper immune function, and coconut sugar is loaded with this nutrient. As it is a rich source of vitamin C, it works amazingly well to keep your joints and skin healthy. Because coconut sugar isn’t highly processed it is a great source of raw antioxidants that play a role in cell regeneration and prevent cell oxidation to reduce the signs of premature aging.

7. Coconut Sugar Also Helps in Regulating Your Cholesterol

Coconut sugar contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids that work against bad cholesterol level. These fatty acids also lower the chances of developing, cancer, heart disease, and depression.

8. There’s Fiber in Coconut Sugar Too

Another of the benefits of coconut sugar is its inulin content. Inulin is a dietary fiber responsible for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, improving the health of your gut, and lowering the risk of developing colon cancer.

9. As It is Not “processed”, Coconut Sugar Contains No Harmful or Additional Ingredients

Unlike other more highly processed and refined forms of sugar, coconut sugar doesn't require any additional ingredients or manufacturing processes. Coconut sugar is simply created by heated the collected palm nectar.

Are you convinced of the benefits of coconut sugar? Will you be switching from regular white sugar?

Hi, great info but where do I get coconut sugar? Walmart?

I bought coconut sugar (from Albertson's grocery store) as a novelty and I used it only once in tea. I wasn't aware that it was so much healthier than white sugar!

Coconut water is a big thing here in UK. It is a bit expensive, especially if more than one of the family drink it regularly. Very refreshing ! Lovely drink with a little rum added too!
