1. Start Your Day with a Super Food Smoothie
Super foods are really easy to work into smoothies. Spinach, bananas, nut butters, coconut water, and avocados are simple super foods and you probably already have some of these on hand. Simply throw your favorite fruits (and veggies) along with a super food or two for a creamy smoothie that’s loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other phytonutrients.
2. Add Raw Nuts and Raw Honey to Your Mid Morning Greek Yogurt Snack
Do you find yourself hungry some midmornings, but are tempted to reach for a donut instead of a piece of fruit? Try mixing plain Greek yogurt with a tablespoon or two of sliced almonds and a drizzle of raw honey. It’s a satisfying, protein-rich snack that will keep you energized and focused for the rest of the day.
3. Top Your Salad with Goji Berries Instead of Dried Cranberries
Sometimes, incorporating super foods is all about simple swaps, like cooking your eggs in coconut oil instead of butter. The same principle applies to salads. Instead of dried cranberries or raisins, try something more adventurous like dried goji berries.
4. Drink Coconut Water to Stay Alert and Hydrated Throughout the Day
Coconut water is by far one of my favorite super foods to date. Not only is it refreshing, but it’s also very versatile. You can use coconut water as the base liquid for a smoothie or something to sip on mid-afternoon. Better yet, coconut water is full of electrolytes, making it the ultimate post-workout recovery drink.
5. Frozen Berries Are an Affordable Alternative to Fresh and Still Have All the Antioxidants
Even when they’re in season, fresh berries can be one of the most expensive fruits on the market. Buying them frozen and thawing individual portions can help you reap all the rewards (i.e. antioxidants) while also saving money. Use the thawed berries in a bowl of oatmeal, Greek yogurt, or even as a snack all on their own.
6. Give Going Meatless a Try at Dinner
Going meatless one night per week is a great way to not only save money on groceries, but can also let you incorporate more super food beans and legumes into your diet. Chickpeas, black beans, lentils, and other plant-based proteins are very healthy, not to mention full of fiber. Pairing them with brown rice and some veggies is a healthy dinner fraught with nutrients.
7. Yes, Chocolate is a Super Food
For those of you who crave a little sugar at the end of the day, your prayers have been answered. Rich in magnesium, antioxidants, and flavonoids, chocolate is one of the most popular super foods on the planet. Invest in some high-quality dark chocolate that doesn’t include refined sugars or hydrogenated oils. This way, you’ll reap the benefits of this miracle super food without gaining weight.
Super foods can certainly be part of your every day diet. All it takes is a little planning and strategizing to incorporate these foods into your meals without going over your budget. What are some of your favorite ways to enjoy super foods?
