Eating for your hormones is one of my favorite things to share with others because there are actually foods that treat hormone problems in a short amount of time. Many women turn to prescription drugs and hormone treatments when their diet is a mess, harming themselves in the process. Food changes the way your brain chemistry, hormones, digestive system, and your entire body work. It truly is the most powerful tool you have to get healthy. Eat more of these foods that treat hormone problems and eliminate processed foods, sugar, refined grains, unhealthy fats, and animal products containing added hormones.
Broccoli is one of the best foods to treat hormone problems because it’s rich in DIM, which is a phytochemical found in cruciferous veggies that helps remove harmful estrogens from the body. Toxic estrogens come from the environment, processed foods, and pesticides and when they take over the body, they can lead to moodiness, depression, cravings, and even weight gain.
2. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are rich in a certain amino acid known as tryptophan, which sends a sense of calm throughout the body and helps reduce stress from high cortisol. Sweet potatoes are also rich in vitamin B6 which helps reduce stress and promotes a healthy metabolism. Last but not least, these beautiful orange veggies are rich in slow-digesting carbohydrates so they produce a long lasting source of serotonin to the body, which helps elevate your mood and prevents overeating.
3. Wild Alaskan Salmon
Wild Alaskan salmon (not farmed) is rich in omega 3 fatty acids that optimize hormones, it’s low in saturated fat, and it’s high in amino acids, which make up its high protein content. Protein is important for healthy hormones because of the way it changes brain chemistry. It helps reduce sugar cravings, high cortisol, and it helps your body produce enough testosterone to balance out estrogen.
4. Greek Yogurt
Plain, nonfat Greek yogurt is a great food to eat if you tolerate dairy. Most people find that even if they don’t tolerate milk, yogurt works just fine. Stay away from the sugary, flavored varieties though. Greek yogurt is high in protein, calcium, magnesium, Vitamin B6, and it’s high in potassium. These nutrients help lower stress, reduce sugar cravings, moodiness, and your waistline as a bonus.
Berries also help reduce harmful estrogen in the body, cleanse the digestive tract, and nourish the liver. Best of all, they’re low in sugar so they won’t spike your blood sugar levels. High blood sugar can trigger hormonal disruptions in the body and promote stress and weight gain.
Raw, not roasted almonds, contain a large amount of minerals and vitamins that help your body function at its best. Magnesium, vitamin B6, calcium, potassium, and protein are all found in almonds and these nuts have been found helpful for optimizing your mood and metabolism. Remember to keep it to an ounce a day (about 20 raw nuts) and enjoy them in the afternoon when you’re tempted to munch on sugary snacks.
7. Leafy Greens
Leafy greens are also amazing for your hormones since they reduce stress and pull harmful estrogens out of the body. They also help support your blood since they’re rich in chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals.
8. Fermented Veggies
Sauerkraut and kimchi are both incredible for you, not to mention delicious. These veggies are high in probiotics, which help balance the mood and digestive system to optimize healthy hormone levels. They also help reduce harmful estrogens from the body and nourish the liver and blood.
9. Whey Protein Isolate
Whey protein isolate is very helpful for women with hormonal issues. First, since the protein is isolated, it’s cholesterol-free, contains no fat, lactose, sugar, or excess carboyhydrates, unlike whey protein concentrate. Whey protein isolate helps reduce stress due to high levels of tryptophan, it’s rich in L-glutamine that helps your hormones, and it helps the body produce glutathione, which improves your hormone and immune health. Lastly, whey protein helps form lean muscle and optimize testosterone in the body so estrogen dominance doesn’t occur. Choose a clean brand that’s made with stevia and has no added sugar or chemicals.
Superfoods like maca, acai, goji, spirulina, and coconut are all great foods to eat too. These foods can help support your body with the nutrients it needs to look and feel its best. They’re also easy to implement into your diet and can be found in your grocery store or online. Do you eat any of these foods?
