1. Salmon BLT
The first time I tried this BLT variation was in a downtown Denver bar and I’ve seen it all over since. Much like its traditional counterpart, a salmon BLT contains bacon, lettuce and tomato, but you’ll also add a cooked salmon fillet to the sandwich. This is one of the easiest and most delicious twists on the BLT you’ll ever find. Simply place the salmon fillet, cooked with a bit of olive oil and some salt and pepper, on the toast and top it with the other sandwich fixings.
2. Grilled Cheese BLT
I love grilled cheese sandwiches almost as much I love a BLT, so imagine my wonder when I found out I could combine both into one super yummy sandwich I’ll never forget. Start with two slices of bread, buttered on one side. Lay a slice of cheese on one piece of bread, then pile on the bacon, lettuce and tomato and cover them with another slice of cheese. Put the other slice of bread, butter side up on the top. Grill the sandwich until the bread slices are golden brown and crispy. I promise you’ll never want to eat a BLT any other way.
Frequently asked questions
3. Avocado BLT
There’s something about the creamy deliciousness of an avocado that just pairs so well with crispy bacon. Next time you get ready to bite into a juicy BLT, slide a couple slices of avocado into it and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. This one is so yummy, you’ll probably need to close your eyes to take it all in.
4. Fried Egg BLT
OK, bacon and eggs just go together, right? So why not put a fried egg on your next BLT? Simply cook it to your liking and stick it on the sandwich just before putting on the top slice of bread. I like an over medium egg so the yolk runs out and flavors the entire sandwich. Toss on a slice of cheese if you dare.
5. Veggie BLT
There’s not a lot that will detract from the fat and calories in bacon, but tossing some veggies onto the sandwich at least gives you some nutrition when you decide to indulge. Add pickles, radishes, cucumber slices, roasted red peppers, diced green olives or thin slices of grilled zucchini to your BLT. Mix and match your favorites to create new and tasty twists on the sandwich.
6. Spicy BLT
If you like to add a little spice to your lunch or dinner, this is the BLT for you. Top your bacon, lettuce and tomato with pickled jalapeno slices, jalapeño cheddar cheese, hot sauce, roasted green chilies or any combination of them that you like. You had better have a glass of water handy for this one, but you won’t be sorry you tried it.
7. BLT Burger
OK, you might call this a bacon cheeseburger, but it’s still a BLT variation you simply must try. Start with a hamburger patty cooked just the way you like it, then top with crispy bacon strips, thick and juicy tomato slices and a leaf of lettuce. Serve it on bread or a bun. This variation also works well with a turkey burger or crab cake.
Don’t you just love a good BLT? I make them for dinner now and then, but they taste even better in a restaurant since you don’t have to do all the work. What’s your favorite way to eat a BLT?
