There are loads of reasons to eat nectarines this summer, not the least of which is that they taste great. Nectarines are in season during the summer, which means you can find them at affordable prices. Keep them at room temperature until they are slightly soft to the touch, then move them the refrigerator to keep them from going bad too quickly. Buy nectarines by the bushel full because you’re going to want to eat them every day. Check out these great reasons to eat nectarines.
1. They’re Refreshing
If you’ve ever bitten into a nectarine, you know just how juicy and refreshing they are. I’m pretty sure this is one of the best reasons to eat nectarines. I like to carry a few with me when I’m out and about with my kids. When they get thirsty and hungry, we can kill two birds with one stone by nibbling on a nectarine. Try it out – I think you’ll feel the same.
2. They’re Low in Calories
Summer is the time when many people want to slim down and stay thin so they can rock their favorite bikini. Is that you? If it is, nectarines are a great low-calorie snack that will fill you up and satisfy a sweets craving at the same time. Slice a nectarine and carry it with you everywhere you go and you won’t ever have to hit the drive-thru again.
3. You Can Cook Them
A raw nectarine is great, but did you know you can grill them? I don’t know about you, but I love to grill just about anything during the summer and nectarines are no exception. Simply slice the nectarine, remove the pit and brush it with a bit of honey before grilling it on the barbecue. Slice and pile on vanilla ice cream and you’re all set.
4. They Are Full of Vitamin a
Your body needs vitamin A to support healthy immunity, but it’s also an antioxidant. That means it helps fight off free radical damage, which can help you reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and myriad other health conditions. Nectarines also contain beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A and uses for your health.
5. They Are Abundant in Fiber
You need fiber for many reasons and nectarines are a great way to boost your intake. Fiber plays a role in healthy digestion and cholesterol control. It also fills you up and keeps hunger at bay for longer periods of time than low-fiber foods. What could be a more delicious way to meet your quota than a nectarine?
6. They’re Versatile
You can use nectarines for many purposes, so you won’t ever get bored eating them. Add them to fruit salad or replace apples or pears in pies and tarts with nectarines. Combine them with blueberries and Greek yogurt in the blender to make a tasty smoothie. You can also add nectarines to salsa and relish and serve it with meat.
7. You Can Make Them Last through the Winter
If you find a great price on nectarines, go ahead and stock up. You can slice and freeze the fruit for smoothies, cereal toppings and a stir in for oatmeal all winter long. You can even puree frozen nectarines for a delicious dessert that’s full of nutrients, but low in fat and calories.
What’s your favorite way to eat a nectarine? I have to say they are pretty darn good plain, but it’s fun to experiment with other ways to eat them. Do you have any other ideas for serving nectarines this summer?
