By Heather

Plant-based foods are key to improving your health and there are some awesome vegan foods for energy you should know about so you can get as many benefits from your meals as possible. Whole plant-based foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and living enzymes that come directly from the soil, which is where important nutrients needed for energy actually form. Consider eating plenty of these yummy vegan foods for energy if you’ve been feeling a bit sluggish lately. Just don’t blame me if you have more energy than you know what to do with!

1 Bananas

Bananas The humble banana is one of the best vegan foods for energy you can eat, not to they're mention cheap and delicious! Rich in potassium, B vitamins, magnesium, Vitamin C, fiber, and simple sugars, bananas can give you a boost of energy while quelling your nerves at the same time. I like having a banana every single morning and afternoon to stay calm, energized, and focused all day.

2 Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes Sweet potatoes contain a similar nutritional profile to bananas, actually. They’re rich in many of the same benefits such as magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, Vitamin C, and complex carbs. They’re especially helpful if you live an active lifestyle or suffer high amounts of stress that cause you to suffer fatigue. Sweet potatoes make an excellent breakfast, lunch, or side dinner dish. Top them with sweet or savory toppings like raisins, almond butter, salsa, or hummus and experiment with new flavors.

3 Maca

Maca Maca is a superfood you have probably heard of by now. It’s a rich source of complex carbs though actually low in calories. Maca root originates from Peru and grows in altitudes of up to 4,000 feet. This makes it a powerful adaptogen due to its ability to withstand such harsh conditions. Maca root is especially energizing to the body and can help create balance and promote optimal nervous system function.

4 Oatmeal

Oatmeal Oatmeal is a fabulous source of energy for the body. It’s rich in iron, magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, and protein. It’s also higher in fiber and protein than many other grains per serving while being lower in calories and carbohydrates. Have a bowl of overnight oats with a mashed banana and some almond milk with chia seeds or vegan protein powder for an energizing meal to keep you full all morning or afternoon long.

5 Sprouted Grain Bread

Sprouted Grain Bread If you tolerate them, sprouted grain bread products make an excellent addition to your diet. I like Food for Life brand, which makes English muffins, breads, and more. These contain no flour and aren’t processed like regular grains. They’re actual living foods, (unlike regular breads and grains) which make them a prime source of nutrients due to the sprouting process. You can find them in the frozen food section wherever bread is sold and keep them in your fridge so they won’t spoil. Have some with some apple butter, no sugar added jam, or almond butter and banana for a yummy, satisfying meal or snack.

6 Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds Chia seeds are high in fiber, low in calories and a good source of B vitamins. They’re also especially high in iron and magnesium, along with omega 3 fatty acids. These nutrients help fight fatigue, stress and prevent mineral loss in the body. If you're not already on the chia bandwagon, hop on and join the rest of us!

7 Cacao

Cacao Cacao is a fantastic source of iron, magnesium, B vitamins, and chromium, a mineral that promotes optimal energy and metabolism of carbohydrates. Cacao is also a natural stimulant but contains none of the harsh side effects that coffee or energy drinks do. Cacao can help combat mental and physical fatigue and is an overall great addition to your diet.

Don’t forget to include plenty of leafy greens into your diet too. All greens and green vegetables are rich sources of magnesium, iron, chromium and protein, believe it or not.
